Oxilem is a mixture of polyphenols obtained from lignin. After cellulose, lignin is the most abundant substance in plants and is essential for plant life, providing structural support as well as an important defence against UV rays, bacteria, moulds and viruses, including the immobilisation of mycotoxins.


Lignin is made solely of phenol units (phenylpropane, C6C3) and is the source of the polyphenols that the plant activates via the enzymatic pathway. The same units, or building blocks, can be obtained by hydrolysis. These natural organic compounds are strong intracellular antioxidants (ORAC >7000) and for this reason they are used in numerous human food supplements.


It is clear from the scientific literature that polyphenols have an important protective role against free radicals. Their high antioxidant activity protects against excess free radicals produced by metabolism (oxidative stress), thus avoiding damage to the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), lipids, proteins and numerous other biological compounds essential for living beings to function properly. Oxidative stress is in fact the main cause of cardiovascular disorders (atherosclerosis, ischaemia, stroke), chronic diseases (diabetes and cancer), neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and damage to cellular membranes, causing a loss of efficiency that leads to premature tissue ageing.


Dietary supplementation with a source of polyphenols can improve the health of livestock as well as humans, thereby reducing disease and, consequently, drug use. Oxilem contains up to 85% of high-bioavailability polyphenols. For this reason, it is defined as a “nutraceutical”. Nutraceuticals (a word coined from “nutrition” and “pharmaceuticals”) are foods which have beneficial effects on health in addition to their nutritional properties. They are also known as functional foods or pharma food. Where does the need for functional foods come from? While the food we eat is often high-calorie, it may lack substances which are vital for our wellbeing, such as fibre, vitamins and minerals. What’s more, these are the very substances that are further lost during the refining process. (In contrast, whole-wheat pasta and its derivatives maintain the nutritional properties of their ingredients). Antioxidants, especially the powerful antioxidants found in fruit and vegetables, are also essential for the physiology of living beings.


Oxilem is an ideal natural food supplement which provides a source of antioxidants for livestock. Animals can suffer oxidative stress due to adverse environmental conditions, disease, metabolic stress, an imbalance of vitamins and minerals, and intoxication. In these conditions, free radicals build up and cause cell damage, oxidising the fatty acids in the cells’lipid membrane and attacking the proteins and structure of their DNA. This damage can harm the animal’s health, affecting milk production, fertility, growth and immune activity.
